10 mind-bending facts about the universe

From neutron stars to multiple dimensions to life on other planets, here are cool facts about the universe that might make your brain hurt.

1. The universe contains around 50,000,000,000 galaxies, each of which has between 100,000,000,000 and 1,000,000,000,000 stars.

2. At the speed of light, time stops.

3. Dark matter makes up 83 percent of the matter in the universe, but we can’t see it and we don’t know what it is.

4. Time passes more slowly in orbit around the earth meaning returning astronauts arrive home slightly younger than if they had spent the same amount of time on earth.

5. Atoms are 99.9999999999999999% empty space meaning all the matter making up the entire human race could fit into a sugar cube.

6. Just a thimbleful of a neutron star would weigh over 100 million tons.

7. Sagittarius 3, an interstellar gas cloud, contains a billion, billion, billion liters of alcohol.

8. The most powerful explosions ever witnessed in the universe are gamma-ray bursts that are trillions of times brighter than our sun.

9. In quantum physics causality can work backwards meaning our choices in the present can effectively determine what occurred in the past.

10. According to some models of cosmology, there are an infinite number of universes with an infinite number of people.

    8. That person is not a dummy! We do live in the universe. Since there is believed to be no "center" or "edge" of the universe, there is no particular reference point with which to plot the overall location of the Earth in the universe. The earth rotates, it's not sitting on anything. The earth is in a part of space that has oxygen, and gravity which can sustain life.

      Delete
    9. no real part of space has oxygen or gravity. the earth has oxygen, and objects have gravity. everything has gravity. also space has a center, because it expands. expanding objects start somewhere, so that is the center. space is not infinite, that notion is silly. ever heard of the CMB, it is a map of the microwave radiation of the early universe, we got the radiation from it bounding off of the edge of the universe and towards us. IF THERE IS AN EDGE, IT IS NOT INFINITE.

      Delete
    10. Then what is after the edge, It is not that agree or disagree with your statement. I have always wondered what is after the edge, if there is a edge.

    1. I agree, and why would you even think that planet earth, the tiny planet we live on, would be the only place in the entire universe where life would be possible.

... and if the universe is infinite, would you really think we would be the only life...? I don't think so... :)

      Delete
    2. the universe is not infinite. something that expands must have a center, and an infinite object cannot have a center. something created this universe, the big bang or big expansion, so that was the center. IT IS NOT INFINITE

      Delete
    3. The expanding universe theory is just a theory... There are many other theories concerning the universe's ending, and whether it's infinite or not. You are completely wrong btw, the universe could be expanding forever. Anyways there are many different scenarios predicted concerning the expansion of the universe, In some the universe comes to an end, in others it collapses into some sort of a singularity. Concluding that we don't know and we can't really say, only predict and pressume. So please don't go around just making statements like you know best, it really annoys me.

  12. Most of these are a bit simplified, but 9 is just misleading. Humans don't operate at quantum scales, for the most part. And 10 is a hypothesis, not a fact.

Nonetheless, thanks for helping educate the masses about how freakin' amazing the universe is.

    3. Now as an atheist I don't believe in a God but I do believe that when your making fun of someone you should spell your words correctly and use the correct words. Not doing so leaves us all open to stereotypes because one person wants to feel different and join a crowd without a firm belief in what they assert or a firm education for that matter.

    4. To the previous poster:

While I fully agree with your opinion, you have made a mistake yourself when you spelt "you're" as "your (making fun of someone)". :P

  13. Number 2 is mistaken. Time doesn't stop, time just becomes undefined. There is an equation to figure out the amount of time experienced by an a object moving close to the speed of light with respect to its velocity called gamma. The equation is 1/(sqrt(1-(v^2/c^2))) so as the velocity approaches the speed of light the denominator becomes closer to zero and when it finally reaches zero the value becomes undefined. So saying that time stops is slightly erroneous. We simply do not know exactly what happens at the speed of light because we currently can't reach it.

  14. Yes, I do believe there is life outside of our universe. If not, it's an awful waste of space. A quote from one of my favorite movies. Seriously though, we can't be the only beings that exist in all the vastness of space. I often wonder who they are, where they are, what they look like and if they are more highly evolved than ourselves ... what they could teach us ... what might we be able to teach them? So fascinating!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Technically there is no such thing as "outside of the universe" due to the term "universe" encompassing all matter. Life simply cannot exist without a material base.

    2. THEY WOULD FUCK US..WE'D HAVE TO KILL THEM ...PROBABLY GOT EYES AS BIG AS YOUR WINDOWS...RAM TWO AIDS INFECTED DILDOS IN THEM SHITS...THIS HERB SMOKES NICE...LOL

      Delete
    3. Perhaps they could teach us how to love each other - we on the other hand are well qualified to teach them how to kill each other .........

We are here for just a moment ...... for example, the moment I have just mentioned has past, never to return and can never be repeated. There are times in our lives we do and say things that we regret - they cannot be undone - therefore, treating each moment as our last, showing love and kindness to our fellow man will make life richer, not only for ourselves but more importantly others.

    2. atom are made up of particles, but particles don't take up 100% of space in atoms, and atoms and molecules don't take up 100% of the space between each other. over 99% of atoms are empty space, because of how far spread out the electrons are when existing in their clouds around the nucleus. most of the stuff between the electrons and the nucleus is empty space, because the electrons are reeeeeeeeallly far away from the center of the atom

  24. We arent made of stars. And there may be other universes; something outside of this universe. Also, there must be other living things somewhere in the cosmos. There cannot be infinite space with only one inhabited planet.

    1. Well if you guys want to be technical, according to the Drake equation wich determines how many different life forms should exist currently in the our galaxy. It says there could be a trillion diffrent forms of life in our galaxy at the highest projected number or at the lowest projected number 3. I know it's a very big gap but that's a real calculation with a real very thought through equation. Personaly I hope it's the earlier of the two beacuse other wise to me human existence is pointless if we're alone.

      Delete
    2. Interesting, but your numbers are wrong. There are different theories concerning the universe, it's structure, end, beginning etc, Some say the universe is infinite, others don't. We can't say for sure, but we pressume it is infinitely large. Here comes the mind fuck, if it is indeed infinite, everything that can happen has happened and will repeat itself an ifninite amount of times. Concluding there would not be a trillion (or whatever) different forms of life, no there would be infinite different forms. Of course I'm just a 16 year old kid, going way out of his league on a topic so abstract and strange as infinity and anything I said I cannot be sure of, but it's just my opinion on the matter.

      Cheers

  31. number 3 is wrong. dark matter makes up about 23% of our universe. regular matter takes up maybe 4.6%, and the rest is dark energy

    ReplyDelete
  32. Most of the facts concerning the universe are dependent on certain situations, which have been predicted by astronomers. Of course there are some things which everyone agrees about and which are completely set, but plenty of things we are just not sure about. This is why so many of you disagree with each other, you can't really generalize theories or matters about the universe, because there is always a 'what if' which includes the one and excludes the other. Therefore I advise you to be carefull with what you say and how sure you are of it, because the truth is we cannot be absolutely sure about anything so abstract and confusing as the universe, The moment we think we know what we are talking about, someone else states something that is the complete opposite.

Thank you! (and my bad for the spelling mistakes, I'm not a native speaker)
